In this issue of Hallowed Ground magazine, we invite you to contemplate the preservation miracle that is Slaughter Pen Farm in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Representing the largest and most complex private battlefield preservation effort in the nation’s history, this simple farm became the “Slaughter Pen” on December 13, 1862, when 5,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured. Five Union soldiers displayed such gallantry that they received the Medal of Honor. Thanks to empowering partnerships and generous donors, this hallowed ground was saved, joining an impressive collection of historic sites in the greater Fredericksburg area. As you read on, remember that we cannot take historic places for granted — we must continue to safeguard them and share their enduring lessons with audiences near and far.
