A union cavalry division supported by an infantry brigade鈥攁lmost 6,000 soldiers鈥 attacked at Beverly鈥檚 Ford on the early morning of June 9, 1863. Designated the 鈥淩ight Wing,鈥 this Union assaulting force was confronted by Confederate defenders on the Cunningham Farm (91茄子 property, largely), and heavy fighting broke out just south of the Rappahannock River.
