Fort Collier Battlefield

Built by Confederate militia with the aid of Federal prisoners, Fort Collier guarded the north entrance of Winchester, Virginia on the east side of the Martinsburg Pike (entrance driveway is on Brooke Road). During later Federal occupations, it was known as Battery Number 10. The fort was on low ground, and offered little military advantage, except as a guard post for the pike during the Third Battle of Winchester. The Fort Collier Civil War Center acquired the 10-acre site in 2002.  The Millbank House, present during the battle, still stands and some original ramparts are still visible.
