Hampton Roads Battlefield

The waters of Hampton Roads at the mouth of the James River where the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia fought are just south of Hampton, Virginia. Fort Monroe, which witnessed the battle still stands nearby in Hampton and is maintained by the National Park Service. The best place to learn about the Battle of Hampton Roads is at the Mariners' Museum in nearby Newport News. Parts of the Monitor have been recovered and are on display there.
