Kinston Battlefield
Kinston Battlefield is the site of the First Battle of Kinston, fought on December 14, 1862 between 2,400 Confederate soldiers and 12,000 Union troops. The Kinston-Lenoir County Visitor & Information Center here offers a short film exploring the battlefield and interpretive displays to provide historical context.
At the battlefield, you can explore earthworks, interpretive markers and an 1860s Baptist church, which replaced Harriet鈥檚 Chapel鈥攁 Confederate defensive position later used as a Union hospital and destroyed during the battle. The park also features a plaza honoring the states that sent soldiers to fight in the battle.
