Secessionville Battlefield

One element of the Confederate defenses, Fort Lamar, remains today and marks the site of the June 16, 1862 battle at Secessionville. Near the fort is a mass unmarked grave of 341 Union soldiers. Most of the remains of the fort are part of the South Carolina Heritage Trust and are maintained by the Fort Lamar Stewardship Committee. A one-acre tract in the footprint of Fort Lamar was conveyed to the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust.
