Totopotomoy Creek Battlefield

The Edwin Shelton family home "Rural Plains" was the scene of a Union attack against Confederates defending Richmond in May, 1864.  The home and property, preserved and interpreted by the Richmond National Battlefield Park, consists of parking, several interpretive waysides, a family cemetery and a walking trail down to Totopotomoy Creek.  The home, built around 1723, was donated to the National Park Service by the Totopotomoy Foundation and heirs of the Shelton family.
