Before its fall in January 1865, Fort Fisher protected blockade-runners en route to Wilmington with supplies vital to the Confederate army. It was the largest of the earthen seacoast fortifications defending the last major open port to the Confederacy. The fall of Fort Fisher, on January 15, 1865, helped seal the fate of the Confederacy. The site boasts scenic easements of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean.
