United States

Fort Pulaski was seized by the Georgia militia on January 3rd, 1861. On April 11, 1862, Union forces overtook this Confederate fort in only 30 hours. The fall of Fort Pulaski secured Union control over Southern ports and kept Savannah from exporting cotton and importing vital military and civilian goods. This remarkably intact example of 19th-century military architecture is preserved for future generations
