Old Washington, a suburb of Maysville, is the childhood home of Albert Sidney Johnston. His home is now a historic museum. Col. Thomas Marshall raised the Sixteenth Kentucky Brigade in Mason County. Families were divided during the war and the museum research library holds many important original documents and books pertaining to the Civil War, including a diary, orders, muster rolls and letters.
