Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site invites visitors to explore one of New York’s most significant Revolutionary-era homes. Located in Albany, this elegant mansion was the residence of Major General Philip J. Schuyler, a military leader, U.S. senator, and member of one of the state’s most prominent Dutch-descended families. In 1775, Schuyler served in the Continental Congress before being appointed a major general in the Continental Army later that year.
The Georgian-style brick mansion was built in the early 1760s on an 80-acre estate overlooking the Hudson River. During the Revolutionary War, it served as a planning center for Schuyler, Henry Knox, Horatio Gates, and others. The site was also where the wedding of Schuyler's daughter, Elizabeth, to Founding Father Alexander Hamilton took place in 1780.
