For 180 years, the Virginia Historical Society (VHS) has been connecting people to America's past through the unparalleled story of Virginia. The VHS, a history museum and research library, features award-winning exhibitions that are entertaining and educational for visitors of all ages. The Society is the only museum with all of Virginia's history under one roof, all centuries, all regions, and all topics are covered. The VHS offers the most comprehensive collection of Virginia history in existence and features the largest display of Virginia artifacts on permanent view. VHS's Civil War collection highlights include: the largest collection of Confederate-made weaponry; artist Robert Knox Sneden's diary, maps, and watercolor paintings; Edwin Forbes' pen and ink camp life drawings; the most Robert E. Lee-related material in the world; J.E.B. Stuart's uniform and pistols; Stonewall Jackson's entire library; the massive "Four Seasons of the Confederacy" murals by artist Charles Hoffbauer; the Civil War horse monument; and hundreds of thousands of Civil War letters, diaries, rare books, Confederate imprints and song sheets, and other materials.
