Bordering the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, the Virginia Museum of the Civil War is operated by the Virginia Military Institute. It provides opportunity to reflect upon the Battle of New Market, which raged just outside on May 15, 1864, and on the Civil War’s impact in Virginia as a whole. It features a state-certified Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center, the Emmy-winning film Field of Lost Shoes (shown at the top of every hour), and various exhibit galleries. These exhibits include artifacts from the Virginia Military Institute, the Battle of New Market, and the Bushong Family, the Kaminsky Gallery of Civil War Firearms, and the Robert Raeburn Civil War Art Gallery.
