Second Manassas | Aug 28, 1862 | Brawner鈥檚 Farm
In order to draw Union General Army of Virginia into battle, Confederate General attacked a Federal column that was passing across his front on the Warrenton Turnpike late on August 28, 1862. In a fierce firefight, Jackson's 鈥淪tonewall Brigade鈥 of Virginians under Colonel William S. Baylor locked horns with the Midwesterners of Gen. John Gibbon's Black Hat Brigade鈥攌nown after the Battle of South Mountain as the Iron Brigade. Both sides drew in reinforcements as the action lasted several hours, resulting in the loss of Confederate Generals Richard S. Ewell and Isaac Trimble. While ending in a stalemate, the battle of Brawner's Farm (also known as Groveton), served as the prelude to the Second Battle of Manassas.
