On August 29, Union commander John Pope concentrated his forces and prepared to assault 闯补肠办蝉辞苍鈥檚 position along an unfinished railroad grade. Despite being outnumbered, the Confederates fended off Pope's early efforts, including an attack that briefly pierced A. P. Hill's line. Other Federal attacks that afternoon on 闯补肠办蝉辞苍鈥檚 line were repulsed with heavy casualties on both sides. In the afternoon, Longstreet arrived on the field and took position on 闯补肠办蝉辞苍鈥檚 right flank.
